Ductile iron pipe

ductile-iron-pipe-01ductile-iron-pipe-02ductile-iron-pipe-03ductile-iron-pipe-04Ductile iron pipe is a pipe commonly used for potable water distribution.[1] The predominant wall material is ductile iron, a spheroidized graphite cast iron, although an internal cement mortar lining usually serves to inhibit corrosion from the fluid being distributed, and various types of external coating are used to inhibit corrosion from the environment. Ductile iron pipe is a direct development of earlier cast iron pipe which it has superseded.[1] Ductile iron has proven to be a better pipe material, being stronger and more fracture resistant; however, like most ferrous materials, it is susceptible to corrosion and retains some brittle characteristics. Individual lengths of ductile iron pipe are joined either by flanges, couplings, or some form of spigot and socket arrangement. UT

Cement Lined Pipe

mscl-01

Also known as MSCL (Mild Steel Cement Lined). Cement Lined Pipe is used in the transmission of potable water and sewage applications. It is also used when the process fluid may corrode regular carbon steel pipe. Due to the fragility of the cement lined coating, it is recommended that the pipe is handled as delicately as possible. This includes the use of rubber covered hooks or other equipment that prevents the damage of the lining. UT

BRASS

brass-01brass-02brass-03

Brass is one of the most common material used in the making of pipe fittings. Brass as a construction material is an alloy of copper and zinc. Brass pipe fittings are of various types and of high demand because of some inherent properties which make them superior than other materials. Brass pipes and pipe fittings are widely used in industrial purposes and residences for carrying water, flammable gases, slurries, chemicals, fire sprinkler systems, etc. Pipe Fittings made of brass are available in a wide variety of shapes and thread sizes to connect, control or adapt any air or liquid flow in a pipe or tube. BT

Why brass pipe fittings?
Brass pipe fittings are popular because they are strong and durable and hence widely used in industrial and residential applications. The use of brass to make various pipe fittings provides a distinct look because of its yellow color. The advantages of brass for pipe fittings include its good corrosive resistance, and also its plating, joining, polishing and finishing characteristics. Brass as a material is easily machined and hence can be given any shapes of the various types of fittings available.

Features of brass pipe fittings:
•    Good strength.
•    Excellent high temperature ductility.
•    Reasonable cold ductility.
•    Good conductivity.
•    Corrosion resistance.
•    Good bearing properties.
•    Low magnetic permeability.

Cast iron pipe fittings

Cast iron pipe fittings are specially designed for soil pipes. These pipe fittings are primarily used in building construction for sanitary and storm drain, waste and vent piping applications. UT/BT

Why Cast Iron Pipe Fittings?
While selecting pipe fittings for drain or sewer system, buyer's mostly prefer materials that are resistant to abrasion. Cast iron pipe fittings are highly resistant to abrasion from sand, gravel, dishwasher discharge, garbage disposal residue and debris, which are carried in suspension along the lower portion of the sewer or drain. This makes cast iron the most sought after choice of buyers for pipe fittings.

Cast iron soil pipe fittings are classified either as:

Hub and Spigot

cast-iron-pipe-fittings-01

Hub coupling fittings comprise a ribbed steel sleeve, which is tightened and held in position by means of steel band clamps on both sides, lined with a rubber gasket. Cast iron couplings are designed to connect pipe to pipe as well as pipe to fitting. Hub and spigot pipe fittings come in two classes of thickness: Service (SV) and Extra Heavy (XH).

No Hub or Hubless

cast-iron-pipe-fittings-02cast-iron-pipe-fittings-03

Pipes made of no hub cast iron are never threaded or welded. These pipes are connected by means of no-hub couplings. Hubless cast iron pipe fittings are usually manufactured without a hub, complying ASTM A 888 or CISP 301 and are available in 1 ½” through 15” sizes. Hubless cast iron couplings are used for joining fittings like ells, wyes, and tees with the pipe.

Uses:
Cast iron pipe fittings are mostly used in building construction and are installed within the partitions. These fittings are best suited for lavatory, tub and water closet fixtures.
Cast iron soil pipe fittings also find application for storm drainage from yards, roofs and courtyards in building construction. Most plumbers prefer cast iron soil pipe and fittings these days in high-rise structures for drain, waste and vent and sewer, irrespective of the height of the building.
Advantage of Cast Iron Pipe Fittings:
•    Excellence in Durability
•    Anti Corrosion
•    Soundproofing Qualities
•    Versatility
•    Low Cost Installation

Copper pipe fittings

Copper Pipe Fittings play an important role in many plumbing and heating applications. These fittings are used for installation of various types of pipes. In fact, copper pipe fittings are mainly used with copper pipes used for supplying hot and cold water in residential water supply lines, as refrigerant line in HVAC, etc. Copper pipe fittings are available in many different sizes and styles and you can select the right one for your application. BT

Why Copper Pipe Fittings?
Copper pipe fittings are extremely resistant to corrosion, and hence are mostly preferred for household water supply pipelines and other plumbing operations.

The pipe fittings also vary depending on the type of pipe used. Copper pipes and fittings are usually made of two basic types of copper:
a.    Soft copper: Tubes or pipes made of soft or ductile copper can be easily bent to travel around obstacles in the path of the tubing. Soft copper tubing is the only type, which is suitable for flare connections. Soft copper mostly preferred for refrigerant lines in split-system air conditioners and heat pumps.

b.    Rigid copper: Rigid copper is widely popular for water pipelines. Rigid copper pipes are connected using compression or sweat connection. As the name suggests, rigid copper cannot be bent and must use elbow fittings to go around corners or avoid obstacles.

Malleable fittings

malleable-fittings-01
Malleable fittings are usually used to connect steel pipes. However, galvanized malleable fittings are used for galvanized pipe. Malleable iron pipe fittings are most common among malleable fittings and are available in many different types and sizes. BT

What is malleable fitting?
Malleable fittings are those fittings having the property of malleability. This is a physical property of metals and metalloids, or any kind of matter. We call a metal malleable when it can easily be deformed, especially by hammering or rolling, without cracking the metal. Malleability is important to form pressing materials such as metals and plastics.
Manufacturing Process:
Malleable iron fittings are made using the most sophisticated metallurgical and processing controls. These fittings are usually made through casting and an automatic precision pattern extrusion. Malleability occurs due to metallic bonding present in most metals. The varieties of free electrons formed during the loss of electrons emerging from the outer-most electron shells of the metal atoms lead to layers of the metal to slide over one another. This process makes the metal malleable.
Buyer's Consideration:
•    The manufacturer's name or trademark must be there in the malleable fittings.
•    The buyer should ensure that the malleable fitting contain service designation for which the fitting is designated.
•    The material designation like steel, cast, malleable or ductile iron and ASTM No. is an extremely important thing that the buyer should consider before buying malleable pipe fittings.
•    Buyer's should ensure that the iron is subjected to proper casting processes.

Applications:
Malleable iron pipe fittings are used in various applications like steam, air, water, gas, oil and other fluids.

STEEL PIPE FITTINGS

Steel has been used for making pipe and pipe fittings since years for its durability and strength. Moreover, steel offers high resistance to heat. This property also adds to the popularity of steel for making pipes and pipe fittings. Steel pipes and pipe fittings are widely used in houses and industrial purposes for carrying water, flammable gases, fire sprinkler systems, etc.

As steel pipes tend to rust, they are often mixed with other materials to add to its durability and make it rust resistant.
Varieties of Steel:
Pipe fittings are made of various types of steel like:

Galvanized Steel

galvanized-steel-01galvanized-steel-02

In order to protect steel from rust and corrosion, steel is coated in layers of zinc through a chemical process. Galvanized steel offers resistance to rust and corrosion and is highly preferred for making pipe fittings and pipe. Galvanized steel also increase the longevity of pipe fittings.
Fittings made of galvanized steel are available in standard sizes ranging from 8mm to 150mm. Galvanized pipe fittings are usually manufactured from seamless tube, forgings or rolled bar or welded tube following some specific standards.
Galvanized steel pipe fittings are for all types of piping inside a building. They are also used in water supply lines, but not in gas pipelines. BT

Carbon Steel

carbon-steel-01

Carbon steel is much more durable and stronger than other varieties of steel, which makes it suitable for making pipe fittings. Also known as plain carbon steel, carbon steel is a malleable and iron-based metal, containing mainly carbon and small amounts of manganese and other elements. Steel is subjected to various processes and can either be cast to shape or wrought into various mill forms from which finished parts are formed, forged, stamped, machined or otherwise shaped. Carbon is the main hardening and strengthening element present in steel, which offers maximum hardness and strength; and decreased ductility and weld-ability. Carbon steel pipe fittings come in various sizes and shapes. BT

Again there are some butt-weld carbon fittings, which feature beveled edges and form a channel of lesser depth for the bead of weld that fixes the piece together. Butt-weld fittings are mainly used to join sections of pipe where permanent and welded connections are required. Elbows, reducers, tees, etc are made of butt-weld steel fittings.

Application of Carbon steel fittings:
Fittings made of carbon steel are used in pipe pipe systems that carry liquids or gases, such as oil, water, natural gas, or steam. Apart from that, carbon steel fittings are highly demanded in construction and maintenance activity in the residential construction, commercial construction, electric-power generation, petroleum refining, shipbuilding and other industrial-use sectors.

Stainless steel

stainless-steel-01stainless-steel-02stainless-steel-03

Stainless steel is widely used for making pipe fittings because of the fact that it is highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion in various natural and man-made environments. Stainless steel is actually a ferrous alloy containing minimum 10% chromium. Selection of right grade of stainless steel for a particular application is really important. A range of pipe fittings like tees, unions, elbows, etc are made of stainless steel. Stainless steel fittings are usually used for household pipelines.
